" ""A383807 “Domino” is an approximately 1 year old intact male DSH. He came to the shelter on 7/28/25 as a stray. He was picked up due to being injured. He had an obviously swollen rear left leg and then some bleeding from his mouth. He was brought right to the shelter to be checked out by our vet team. We found what we suspect is a broken jaw and a broken leg. Despite all this he is THE NICEST little kitty, purring and headbutting and rolling for us throughout the exam. He is on pain meds but he needs more medical care than we can give here. His stray hold is up on Monday, August 4th but he can leave on foster basis to a rescue prior to get him started on care. If he isn’t tagged by Monday, August 4th, 2025 we will have to proceed with humane euthanasia on Tuesday, August 5th.""

Conditions were so crowded at animal control that they asked us to pick him up when no other rescues offered help, even though he would have to wait the weekend to see our surgeon.

The following week, Checkers saw the orthopedic surgeon who found that his jaw thankfully was not broken which was feared due to blood seen in his mouth. . He did lose a canine tooth and the specialist checked it out again when he was sedated for surgery on his broken leg but there was no pain and a normal bite as well as no swelling and no wounds.

Checkers did have a luxation/fracture of his left hock that the surgeon got lucky with and was able to do a reduction. He needed to wear a splint for 3-4 weeks as he recovered and was checked weekly by his specialist to be sure he is healing as he should. Checkers was also neutered and is leukemia and fiv negative.

Getting outside for sunshine and fresh air, as he had to be so confined to protect him as he healed.

It was a long recovery as the break was complicated. After the cast came off, he wore a soft splint for many weeks until the leg was fully mended
