IN early August, 2025 Home For Life Animal Sanctuary took in a 6 month old kitten from a Twin Cities animal control with injuries from a fall.

"Afternoon everyone, We just got an injured cat that needs rescue help ASAP. Please read on for more information and email with any questions or to tag!

"Jigglypuff A384 6 m, Female Brown Tabby – Finder reported that he found this kitty laying on the sidewalk as he was leaving his apartment. She was bleeding from her nose and had defecated, finder suspects she fell from a balcony of the 5-story building. On examination, it was noted that she has deviation of her mandible and a non-weight bearing left forelimb lameness, so we suspect both jaw and front limb fractures. She is very nice and tolerant given all she is going through. We would love to give her a chance to have her injuries addressed and live a full life. If she is not tagged and picked up BY TODAY, THURSDAY 8/7/25 at 5:30pm, she will be humanely euthanized."

So we didn't have much time to make a decision whether to help her and we also helped another young cat, who had been found with a broken leg, this one on the sidewalk, also as a stray. That was our cat Checkers.

We were not prepared for the other part of this poor broken kitten's story when we picked her up. Our staff person, called, shouting, in shock about what she had been told:

"I mentioned to your staff transporting when she picked up the broken kitty this morning that we do have an investigation into the circumstances of how this cat ended up injured. A second kitten was found deceased at the address (an apartment high rise) today and we have a suspect.

That being said, we have information that the suspect may have had sex with the cat so when having her checked out if the vets could look to see if they see anything that could indicate that we would appreciate it."

Talk about adding insult to injury!

We renamed this little girl Reese-puff. The jiggly seemed wrong in light of it all. She is a resilient kitten and wanted to live and heal. It has taken a long time for her to do that. She was examined and no permanent injuries related to the presumed sexual assault were identified. We have wondered, although there is no way to confirm, whether our Reese, spirited girl that she is, fought back, so was dumped over the railing from the high rise, to meet her death, presumably, while her sister, the other kitten, maybe more timid, died from the assault. It is too hard to think about or picture in detail.

Reese in the catio in the summer in 2025, where she had to be more confined as her broken leg healed. Still hypervigilant after all she has been thru.

Reese likes to rest in an open crate, as she must feel safe. She reminds us of Rue, another brown tabby tiger cat, who also experienced a traumatic fall from a balcony.

Wishing Reese could talk and tell what happened to her and her sister. She doesn't like to remember what happened to her earlier this summer.

We move on from this sordidness by taking the best care of Reese, and ensuring her healing physically and mentally, she has done well, and has seemed to find a way forward from her traumatic ordeal.

Our Reese survived the worse and is safe and loved now that she is home for life!
